An HSM system can consist of a number of HSM 8000 series units in a standard 19-inch rack. HSM 8000 series units can also be fitted in an existing RG7000 style cabinet and can work in conjunction with existing RG7000 HSM units.
The rack should be installed as a peripheral device in a computer room. The maximum recommended ambient temperature for operating HSMs is 40°C. Consideration must be made to the airflow and temperature when the units are installed in a rack so to ensure this temperature is not exceeded. Additional racks and units may be added as needed.
Each HSM unit is delivered in a box with its power cables. A droplead is also supplied to patch the HSM’s 26-way D-type host port connector to a standard 34-way V.35 connector if required.
A set of blank Smartcards is normally shipped with one of the HSMs, and a set of physical keys is supplied with each HSM unit. The keys are sometimes taken to the installation site by an installation engineer.
